Today the beam for the deck goes up. It spans 16 feet to give a clear space under the deck for the terrace. Originally the drawings called for five 2x12s, but the larch came with an actual dimension of 2" by 12," so we only needed four, and we still got a heftier beam. (New size: 8" x 12", original spec: 7 1/2" x 11 1/4").
The beam sits atop 6" x 6" loqust posts. The wood is not dressed, or sanded, so it has a nice rustic quality for our underdeck hangout.

Under-deck hangout. Hmmm. Unique. Can hardly wait to see it. Bet you're waiting for the deck to be usable. The view is going to be wonderful.
