We haven't used the "front" door since we moved in; we thought the latch didn't work and we couldn't find a key. But for a while we won't have any other door but this one, so I went and bought a $50 new keyed entry handle. Turns out it was the wrong kind, we needed a mortise lockset, but not just any kind. I find something on-line on a website specializing in antique replacement hardware, for a mere $479.
This drives me upstairs to the basket of miscellaneous keys of unknown parentage. After trying about 10 of them I find the key for the lock! A little lock oil, and a better understanding of the little buttons on the side and how they make the lock "not work" from the outside, and we're all set. I found a $500 key!

Congratulations on your archeological find! You'll have an authentic vintage front door. Our new lock on our new door is also going to have a mortise lockset... and wow, you're right about the expence.
