Day 194

We're trying a new technique for the bottom step. Instead of a solid slab of concrete or granite, Adriel and Tom have come up with this nifty idea for creating a floating "slab" of gravel.
Adriel dug down quite a ways then filled the hole with gravel. Then he created a box of TimberSil 2x4s and put a lid on top, leveled it, and it becomes the base for the carriage of the stairs.

What an interesting concept! I wonder how that would do earthquake country or where you might expect soil to slip around. Does it help prevent cracking or separating of the base to the stairs going up?
