Roof insulation

We're considering trying a roof insulation product that doubles as the venting system and nailing board: "InsulVent" by Insulfoam, a Carlisle Company. http://www.insulfoam.com/images/stories/docs/3109_InsulVent.pdf and http://www.insulfoam.com/
Using this we could add an additional R8 or so to the main roof, which is only 2x6s and not deep enough to meet today's code.

You may want to look into the viability of this product: http://insulation.owenscorning.com/professionals/insulation-products/insul-drain-drainage-board.aspx

I had seen it a couple of days ago. it does not have the integral plywood, but it has the channels in it for venting... crazy as it might sound, it might just work... and may be a lot cheaper....

I can't wait to see what you decide to do...

Wish we'd known about something like this when we took off our 40-year-old shake roof and put on a very nice composition, and thus lowered our insurance on the home. But now it's hotter 'n blue blazes in the attic... maybe 20 degrees or so than with shake... does that sound about right? Will we have to get a spray on foam or something ? To spray on the attic side of the roof? Otherwise, the house itself in the living places seems just fine and the heating/air-conditioning system seems to be keeping everything under control. Should we be worried about the hot attic?

Gerry,
If you have insulation over your living areas (on the floor of the attic) then that is fine. You should have some sort of venting system for the roof. You might even consider a solar powered exhaust fan, or at the least screened vents on each gable end. It's not necessary to insulate the roof if you don't have any habitable space and many new houses don't.
Plus at more than $100 a sheet for the insulvent I don't know if you'd want to pay the extra price.
